Paper TitleCulture, Couples, and Cancer
Abstract:Although diagnosis of a serious illness has health implications for the individual, all family members are affected. For example, some diseases, such as prostate cancer, often have profound effects on couples. Despite this recognition, however, few studies explore the communicative, psychological, and cultural impacts of health problems on each spouse and the overall marriage. In this project, based on interviews with New Zealand couples, we examine marital partners’ views of health and illness and experiences with prostate cancer and address cultural views of sickness and wellness and opportunities and challenges in intercultural interviewing.
