Paper TitleThe Influence of Relationship-Specific Self Construals on Relationship-Specific Communication Styles
Abstract:This study was designed to explore the relationship between self construal orientation and communication styles. Moreover, as developed in much of Gudykunst and associates’ recent work, this study examined the possibility that individuals emphasize different self construals in different contexts. Two contexts that are considered significant and important in-groups were chosen for examination (i.e., family members and work colleagues). Results found that individuals emphasize different self construals in the family and organizational contexts. Further, this study investigated the communication styles individuals use within these two contexts. Results found that individuals use different communication styles with family members and work colleagues. Finally, this study attempted to find connections between self construals and communication styles. Partial explanations for the communication styles that individuals use within the family and organizational contexts can be found by examining differences in self construals in these two contexts.
