Impact of MNCs on Indian Work Culture: The Case of Emerging BPO Industry in India
Abstract:
This paper explores the impact of various cultures on work practices in India. The literature in this area points out that foreign culture has an impact on variables like organization structure, communication processes, gender roles and relationships, power distances, leadership styles, empowerment, drive for achievement for self versus community kinship, etc. In this scenario the Indian BPO industry has been explored and the effect of multinationals on Indian work culture has been studied on some of the dimensions mentioned above. The study has been carried out through the use of select case studies in India. The sample consists of Indian BPOs and MNC owned BPOs. Relative comparisons have been made on various dimensions; indicated earlier in the abstract. The study has been conducted using questionnaires and conducting indepth interviews with various functional managers working in these BPOs.
