Ramsey, others address House budget subcommittee

The presidents of the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky told state lawmakers Jan. 21 that they are worried top researchers and faculty will leave their institutions if they have to go a third straight year without a pay raise. UofL President James Ramsey and others spoke to members of the House Budget Review Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education.

With budget issues putting a squeeze on higher education funding, UofL is asking its alumni, friends, community members, faculty and staff to become UofL Advocates and help ensure that education doesn't take the brunt of governmental cuts.

 
 
 
 

Students prepare for Rally on Higher Education in Frankfort

UofL's Student Government Association will lead a contingent of students to Frankfort on Feb. 9 to encourage Kentucky legislators to support higher education. The UofL students will join students from around the state at the annual Rally for Higher Education. The group will ask legislators not to make cuts to higher education funding and to fund new capital projects.

 
 
 
 

UofL students host benefits for Haitians

I + Haiti buttons

UofL students asked people to open their hearts to the people of Haiti at two fundraising events last week. Students sold buttons and collected money and supplies at a special event to help relief efforts that continue in the wake of a devastating earthquake that shook the Caribbean country on Jan. 12.

 
 
 
 

Alumni invited to free financial workshops in March

Need help with financial planning? UofL graduates are invited to four free financial classes hosted by the UofL Alumni Association. The four-part series meets March 2 ("Mastering a Personal Financial Plan and Investment Strategy"), March 3 ("Mastering Disability Planning"), March 8 ("Mastering Retirement Planning") and March 9 ("Mastering Death Planning"). All classes will be in the University Club's first-floor board room, Belknap Campus, 5:30-7 p.m. Check the alumni events calendar for full details.

 
 
 
 

University Libraries makes 2009 flood photos available

2009 Flood

Louisville was hit by a catastrophic flood Aug. 4, 2009, that resulted in millions of dollars in damage. It also resulted in some incredible photographs. To preserve these images for future generations, UofL Libraries asked the public to submit digital photos and video of the flood. Some are now available online as part of University Libraries' Digital Collections.

 
 
 
 

Study shows UofL is a major economic driver

UofL is a major economic driver for Louisville and Kentucky, providing a solid return on investment for the state tax dollars it receives, according to a study by economist Manoj Shanker. The study found that investments related to UofL from 2003 to 2009 resulted in the creation of thousands of jobs.

 
 
 
 

Jazz Week 2010 features NEA Jazz Master Toots Thielemans

Jazz Master Toots Thielemans

National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Toots Thielemans is among the award-winning performers at UofL Jazz Week 2010, Feb. 23-28. Thielemans, 87, rarely makes appearances outside of Belgium. His only U.S. appearances in 2010 will be at New York City's Lincoln Center and at UofL in a duo setting with pianist Kenny Werner at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28.

 
 
 
 

Literature and culture conference attracts writers, scholars

Topics will run the gamut from 9-11 to the environment, film to music, poetry to geography when about 600 scholars gather Feb. 18-20 at the UofL for the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture Since 1900. UofL's English and classical and modern languages departments sponsor the 38th annual event. Keynote addresses are free and public.

 
 
 
 

Brown Cancer Center recognized for breast care

The UofL James Graham Brown Cancer Center has received unique distinction as the first and only center in the state to receive a full three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Accreditation goes to centers that provide the highest level of quality breast care.

 
 
 
 

Up on the roof: Greenhouse studies tackle climate change

Outside the temperature was a chilly 22 degrees, but on the roof of UofL's Life Sciences Building, it was nice and toasty as senior biology major Keera Lowe set up a study to determine if a fungus can help American beach grass survive and grow. Lowe studies with biology professor Sarah Emery, whose research interest is restoration of Great Lakes sand dune plant systems.

Cards' 1975 NCAA Final Four team to be honored Feb. 6

UofL's 1974-75 men's basketball team--which reached the NCAA Final Four--will be honored at halftime of the Cardinals' Feb. 6 game against Rutgers on its 35th anniversary of reaching the national semifinals. Team members will sign autographs in the Kentucky Exposition Center's South Wing following the game at The Caper, a benefit for the Family and Children's Place, which supports families and children affected by violence, abuse and neglect.

 
 
 
 

Baseball Cardinals ranked 12th in preseason Top 25

The Louisville baseball team earned its fifth and highest top-20 preseason ranking in late January as the Cardinals debuted at No. 12 in the Rivals.com Preseason Top 25. The Cardinals also are ranked 13th by Baseball America, 13th by Ping! Baseball, 19th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and 20th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll.

 
 
 
 

Brandie Radde rejoins women's basketball team

Head Coach Jeff Walz announced on Monday that Brandie Radde will rejoin the women's basketball team. Radde left the team in the middle of last season, her junior year, to concentrate on academics. Radde will graduate in May with a degree in biology and plans to attend medical school.
