Join the men's Big East Tournament celebration in NYC

Big East Tournament

The Cardinal men's basketball team will be heading to the Big East Tournament in New York, and UofL will host events in the city. Pregame parties start three hours before each UofL game at Stout NYC, 133 W. 33rd St. On March 9, UofL's music faculty will perform at Carnegie Hall (see article below). On March 11, don't miss the Big East Fan Extravaganza at the Madison Square Garden. And on March 12, take advantage of the Big East Alumni/Student Career Fair at Madison Square Garden. Grawemeyer Players to perform at Carnegie Hall March 9

Music is meant to be listened to, but it's not always easy to find a way to hear the best new contemporary pieces. The Grawemeyer Players, a UofL faculty chamber ensemble, soon will help fill that gap. The group of up to 13 musicians was created to bring life to the outstanding but rarely heard "other works" written by winners of UofL's Grawemeyer Award in Music Composition. The group will give its premiere performance March 9 at 8 p.m. in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.

 
 
 
 

Ramsey addresses legislators in Frankfort

UofLPresident James Ramsey told Kentucky lawmakers Feb. 18 that UofL has made significant progress in research and graduation rates despite getting hit with nine state budget cuts in nine years. Addressing the House Budget Review Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Ramsey said that UofL has cut or avoided $135 million in costs during the past seven years while ramping up efforts to turn underperforming assets into revenue generators.

 
 
 
 

A&S inducts new Hall of Honor members

The University of Louisville's College of Arts and Sciences inducted four former faculty members into its Hall of Honor during a Feb. 25 ceremony. Lucy Freibert, Eliza Atkins Gleason, Gerhard Herz and Phil Laemmle were added to the Hall of Honor, which recognizes alumni, faculty and others who have made significant and lasting contributions to the college, university, local community and society.

 
 
 
 

March Madness 'bracketology' with Crum and Griffith

March Madness is here--which means it's time to get serious about brackets. On March 16 Hall of Fame Coach Denny Crum and Darrell "Dr. Dunkenstein" Griffith will reveal their secrets for "bracketology"--or picking out teams for the 2010 NCAA Tournament Bracket. Enjoy a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by bracket help at 7 p.m., at the University Club, Belknap Campus. Cost is just $15 (includes bracket entry and heavy appetizers; cash bar).

 
 
 
 

Pediatrician Melissa Currie discusses child abuse in Kentucky

Melissa Currie

UofL pediatrician Melissa Currie recently passed the 2009 child abuse pediatrics certifying exam, making her one of a handful of physicians nationwide who are certified in this newly designated medical specialty. This accomplishment is especially meaningful in light of Kentucky's serious problem with child abuse. Currie was interviewed about her specialty and what these new developments mean for Kentucky children.

 
 
 
 

March 6 expo opens up engineering possibilities to public

The public is invited to the J.B. Speed School of Engineering's annual Engineering Expo this Saturday, March 6, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Joe Adams, president of Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, Calif., will give the expo's free, public keynote talk at 11 a.m. The Engineering Expo, sponsored by the Speed Student Council, showcases the school's research and activities.

Join the UofL Alumni Association for a day at Keeneland Racetrack April 9. The association will have a section in the Lexington and Kentucky rooms, with a spectacular view of the racecourse, a buffet lunch, conveniently located pari-mutuel windows and television monitors. 'A Song for Coretta' crosses generations in civil rights struggle

Song for Coretta

UofL's African American Theatre Program will present "A Song for Coretta," a play by Pearl Cleage, through March 7. Cleage's drama relates the interactions of strangers waiting at the end of a long line at the 2006 memorial service for Coretta Scott King. The play will be performed 8 p.m. nightly plus a 3 p.m. matinee March 7 at the Thrust Theatre, 2314 S. Floyd St.

UofL research building gets high marks for being green

Research Building

UofL's Clinical and Translational Research Building has received a top rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building has received a Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, one of the council's highest designations. Only 33 research buildings in the United States have earned the same certification.

 
 
 
 

McConnell-Chao archives films win Telly Awards

Two films shown daily at UofL's Sen. Mitch McConnell and Secretary Elaine L. Chao Archives and Civic Education Gallery have each won two 2010 Telly Awards. In a12-minute film, McConnell takes visitors behind the scenes in the U.S. Capitol. A 10-minute film traces the life and career of Chao, who immigrated to the United States from China as a girl and went on to serve as U.S. labor secretary.

 
 
 
 

Book and media sale at the Red Barn

Mark your calendar for a book and media sale April 8-11 at UofL's Red Barn. The sale, hosted by the Honors Student Council, will benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kosair Children's Hospital. Got books, movies or music you want to donate to the cause? Banquet honors 228 student-athletes for academics

UofL honored 228 student-athletes for maintaining a 3.25 grade point average at the 14th annual Red and Black Honors Banquet and Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony Feb. 28. The Cardinal team awards, which recognize the highest team GPA, were given to the No. 13 ranked women's swimming and diving team.

 
 
 
 

Baseball earns Top 10 national ranking

UofL Baseball

Following a sweep at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge Feb. 27 and 28, Louisville baseball moved into the Top 10 in the Rivals.com and Baseball America polls released the afternoon of March 1. The Cardinals, with a 7-0 record and off to their best start since 1957, moved up three spots to No. 8 in the Rivals.com Top 25 and up three spots to No. 10 in the Baseball America Top 25.

 
 
 
 

Lacrosse breaks into Top 20 poll

For the first time in school history, UofL's lacrosse team in ranked in the Top 20 as Inside Lacrosse placed them at No. 19. "We are incredibly honored to have gained the recognition of the lacrosse community in being ranked in the top 20 for the first time," said UofL head coach Kellie Young.
