EPA gives award to Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center at UofL

December 6th, 2007

The Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center at the University of Louisville is one of six organizations recognized this week by the Environmental Protection Agency for its leadership in promoting the efficient use of water.

KPPC provides technical information and assistance to Kentucky businesses and industries to improve their environmental performance and reduce their operating costs. The organization received the EPA’s Water Efficiency Leader (WEL) Award for ongoing efforts to find profitable pollution prevention solutions for the metal finishing industry. One example the EPA cited was KPPC’s work at one metal finishing plant that resulted not only in a 30 percent net water savings, valued at $50,000 annually, but also in a 50 percent increase in production.

“Being cited by the EPA as one of six outstanding programs is a significant honor and an indicator that the KPPC and UofL are playing a significant role in protecting the environment,” said UofL President James Ramsey. “KPPC’s efforts are saving Kentucky businesses money and protecting our precious natural resources for families throughout the commonwealth.”

A panel of national water experts selects WEL Award recipients on the basis of leadership, innovation and water saved. According to the EPA, the award helps foster a nationwide ethic of water efficiency, which is critical to the growing U.S. economy and quality of life. Demographic shifts, increased demand and aging water infrastructure have created a national need for more efficient use of water resources.

Other WEL Award recipients are Intel Corp., Ocotillo Campus (Chandler, Ariz.); Santa Clara Valley Water District (San Jose, Calif.); Frito-Lay (Plano, Texas); Lackland Air Force Base (Lackland, Texas); and Allan Dietemann, Seattle Public Utilities (Seattle, Wash.).
