Nationally renowned legal experts will discuss the possible impact on voluntary school integration policies of last summer’s U.S. Supreme Court rulings to strike down the use of race as the sole factor to allocate students to different schools.

The symposium will consider the consequences of the court’s decision on the future of school districts that hope to encourage diverse student populations. Particular focus will be on Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education, which originated in Louisville.

Gary Orfield, professor of education, law, political science and urban planning and co- director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA, will be keynote speaker. He has written several publications, including a series of reports about the progress of desegregation in the last 30 years.

Other speakers include Reginald C. Oh, professor of law at Texas Wesleyan University; Girardeau A. Spann, professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center; Bryan K. Fair, professor of law at the University of Alabama School of Law; and john a. powell, Williams chair in civil rights and civil liberties and executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University.

Each speaker also will submit an article for publication in a future issue of the University of Louisville Law Review that explores the strengths and weaknesses of the court#8217;s decision, the future of voluntary school integration, alternatives to address school integration policy and other aspects of the Meredith case.
