University Foundation plans to purchase land bordering Belknap Campus

July 2nd, 2008

The University of Louisville’s 287-acre Belknap Campus soon may grow to more than 320 acres.

UofL President James Ramsey was among the participants at a July 2 news conference at which Kentucky Trailer and state and local officials announced that the company will move from 2601 S. Third St. to a new location in Louisville’s Jefferson Riverport International.

Kentucky Trailer’s relocation makes it possible for the University Foundation to purchase the 33-plus-acre land parcel, which is between the J.B. Speed School of Engineering and Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

Ramsey said that UofL’s master plan has included the Kentucky Trailer property for several years.

“Today’s announcement marks a major milestone for the University of Louisville and opens the door for a dramatic transformation on Belknap Campus,” Ramsey said.

Kentucky Trailer was approved for $13.5 million from the Kentucky Industrial Revitalization Act to retain existing jobs and create new jobs. The move to Riverport will allow the company to expand.

“This is a significant day in our company’s history,” said Kentucky Trailer President and CEO Gary Smith. “Kentucky Wagon Manufacturing Co., was founded on this location nearly 130 years ago, and we are proud that the property will be supporting the University of Louisville’s future growth.”
