New racks increase capacity for bicycle parking on Belknap Campus

October 24th, 2008

Bicycle parking capacity on Belknap Campus has increased by 42 percent with the addition of 24 bicycle racks. The new racks accommodate up to 396 bicycles, bringing total rack spaces to more than 1,300.

New racks, installed in requested locations and where usage surveys indicated a need, are located near these buildings:

“We ask bicycle commuters to use the racks and not secure their bicycles to railings and light posts because that may restrict access for people with impaired mobility,” said Wayne Hall, University Police chief.

People pedaling through campus also need to give pedestrians the right of way and ride safely, Hall said.

Long-term plans call for new racks to be installed as part of every new facility construction project.

The Department of Public Safety will continue to monitor cycling on campus. Cyclists should DPS at 852-6111 if they are interested in having racks added at other locations.
