U of L center to host conference on autism, related disorders

The conference is geared to educators, family members, psychologists and others dealing with people who have autism and related disorders and will cover diagnosing, treating and understanding autism and related disorders.
North Carolina State graduate student Dave Hamrick will speak June 16 and share his own experiences with autism and how he has learned to cope with the disorder at each stage in his life. Hamrick also will discuss accommodations colleges offer those with autism.
Other highlights include:
- An all-day workshop by speech pathologist Linda Hodgdon on ways to improve communication, behavior and social skills of children with autism
- A two-day workshop by educational specialist Rebekah Heinrichs on how to prevent bullying in schools and how that affects students with autism and related disorders
- A June 15 expo featuring service providers and support organizations in Kentucky
- Free sessions June 16 offering practical strategies for people in law enforcement, preschools and health care
The event is sponsored by the University of Louisville’s Kentucky Autism Training Center, which is part of the College of Education and Human Development, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education and the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence.
