Nurse educator at UofL first to receive New York Times award
November 14th, 2006

Tracey Gaslin
University of Louisville nursing professor Tracey Gaslin will be the first nurse educator to receive the New York Times Job Market “Tribute to Nurses” Award, given to honor outstanding patient care and excellence in nursing education.
Gaslin is an assistant professor at UofL, physician liaison for the Visiting Nurses Association-Nazareth, and pediatric nurse practitioner with Brownsboro Park Pediatrics. She was nominated by nursing student Lisa Long.
“I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award,” Gaslin said. “God has blessed me with so many educational opportunities and a wonderful network of family support and peer mentors who encourage me along the way. I hope this award encourages all nurses to pursue their dreams and realize that they can accomplish whatever task is before them.”
Gaslin’s academic research focuses on issues faced by children with hemophilia, cancer and other diseases that require infusion therapy. She teaches nursing students in a variety of settings beyond the classroom, including summer camps for children with hemophilia and cancer and aiding victims of natural disasters. She also has traveled to Romania to share her expertise with physicians and nurses there as part of UofL’s International Pediatrics Program, a partnership with Humana Foundation.
At VNA-Nazareth, Gaslin is a physician liaison for pediatric home infusion services and coordinates nursing, pharmacy and medical equipment in the home environment.
Gaslin will be one of four nurses honored at a Nov. 17 reception in New York. The 2006 award winners will be featured Nov. 19 in a special advertising section in The New York Times Magazine. There were more than 500 nominations for the award. Winners are determined by a panel of nurse professionals and by The New York Times.
