The University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will headline a special Grawemeyer Award concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Under the direction of Kimcherie Lloyd and Frederick Speck, respectively, the orchestra and wind ensemble will perform works of previous winners of the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. The 2007 recipient of the $200,000 award also will be announced.

The concert is one of several special events scheduled throughout 2007 to celebrate the School of Music’s 75th anniversary.

The school’s annual Jazz Week in February and fall Faculty Gala will have a 75th anniversary theme, said music dean Christopher Doane. Other events include an alumni concert at Gardencourt, the school’s former location, and an international collaboration between the School of Music and the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music (Katowice, Poland) to perform “The Marriage of Figaro” in Katowice and Louisville.

“We want the 75th anniversary celebration to reflect not only the local influence the School of Music has had on the culture of this community, but also to illustrate the national and international involvement it has had and will have,” Doane said.

The Carnegie Hall program will feature a rare performance of the 1993 winning piece, “Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra” by Grawemeyer winner Karel Husa, with faculty member Paul York as the cello soloist. Other featured Grawemeyer Award-winning composers will be Witold Lutoslawski (1985), Aaron Jay Kernis (2002), Joan Tower (1990), John Corigliano (1991), Krzysztof Penderecki (1992) and Toru Takemitsu (1994).

The following day, the School of Music will host a 1 p.m. symposium and concert at the New York City Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.

Pulitzer-Prize winning music critic Tim Page, of the Washington Post, will moderate a discussion among Grawemeyer recipients Husa, Corigliano, Tower, Kernis and the 2007 recipient. School of Music faculty and students will perform chamber music of Grawemeyer composers, including the 2007 recipient.

The Grawemeyer Foundation at UofL annually awards $1 million — $200,000 each for works in music composition, education, ideas improving world order, religion and psychology. The Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion is given by the university and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Other 2007 award recipients were announced in late November.
