Speed Has a New Name
U of L President James Ramsey has approved our new name, the J.B. Speed School of Engineering.
Departing Dean Thomas Hanley, with input from alumni, faculty, staff, students and the Industrial Board of Advisors, has been considering the name change for several years.
The word "Scientific," part of the school's title since its founding in 1924, was deemed an "anachronism," says interim Dean Mickey Wilhelm.
Wilhelm says that in the early days it was important to distinguish between an engineering school that was based in math and sciences versus one that was more trades focused.
"The overwhelming majority of people that we asked about changing the name thought it was a good idea," Wilhelm says.
"People would consult our brochures or Web page and not know we have an engineering school at U of L. The new name will change that."
