The University of Louisville Board of Trustees at its June meeting urged President James Ramsey to remain as president past his planned retirement in 2012. Ramsey said he was open to the idea of staying on. "Much progress has been made, but there is more work to do on the university's graduation rates and projects like NUCLEUS and the development of the Shelby Campus," he said. |

By 4:30 a.m. on a Saturday in June, more than 250 people were waiting in line to get free healthcare at Pike County Central High School. UofL dental faculty, students and alumni manned the dental clinic for the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Kentucky program--and treated 549 people June 27-28. They filled almost 500 cavities and pulled almost 600 teeth. |

UofL Kent School of Social Work professor Ruth Huber received an unusual request from a future graduate student: Could she send school supplies to 250 children in Iraq? The request came from Capt. Randy Smith, who is serving in Iraq with the Kentucky National Guard. Huber helped collect and sent 39 military APO boxes to Smith in mid-April. |

Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon forty years ago. UofL's Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium will celebrate the landing Monday, July 20, 6:30-9:30 p.m. The first 100 guests will receive free moon pies. Activities include a Lunar Landing Party for kids, the premier of the planetarium's new show "Astronaut," guest speakers and the movie "For All Mankind." Admission is $5 (under age two free). |

Student car makers are flying high at UofL. The university's Mini Baja team, a group of students from the J.B. Speed School of Engineering's Society of Automotive Engineers that builds competition vehicles, placed 14th overall out of 120 teams in an international competition in Wisconsin June 11-14. UofL teams placed sixth in April competitions. |

UofL's Environmental Finance Center has created a website, kyfoodtrader.org, to connect consumers with local farmers. "It's kind of like a Craig's List for agriculture products," said Carol Norton, who manages the site. Farmers post their available products, and consumers and nonprofits post the type of product they want to find. |

Governor announces appointments to trustees board |
Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced July 6 three new members to the UofL Board of Trustees. The board members, who will serve through June 30, 2015, replace trustees whose terms have expired. Kevin W. Cosby, senior pastor of St. Stephen Baptist Church in Louisville and president of Simmons College of Kentucky, replaces Jessica Loving. Mark E. Lynn, a Louisville optometrist and business owner, replaces Marie K. Abrams. Phoebe A. Wood, director of Angel Investor, replaces Sandra M. Snowden. |

The Cardinals open the football season Sept. 5 versus Indiana State. Before then, meet the coaches and players at the annual kickoff luncheon Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Kentucky International Convention Center's Cascade Ballroom, downtown Louisville. Two members of the 2008-09 men's basketball team--Earl Clark and Terrence Williams--were selected in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft. Williams was the 11th selection overall by the New Jersey Nets, while Clark was taken as the 14th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns. |
