Ramsey takes UofL on the road

Jim Ramsey

President James Ramsey's car is going to need an oil change and maybe even a set of new tires by the end of October. Ramsey, several researchers and members of the admissions and alumni staff are in the midst of UofL's 2009 outreach program, a road trip that's taking them to practically every corner of Kentucky. The group's 16 stops include visits to some 10 high schools in the eastern, western and central parts of the state. See a video and photos of the Frankfort road trip.

UofL neuroscientists hope to get people walking again

Neuroscience researchers at UofL will be the only team collaborating with an international group of scientists who recently announced they had enabled paralyzed rats to walk while supporting their own weight. Research could boost solar cell efficiency

UofL researchers and collaborators have discovered a better method of controlling the growth and creation of tiny structures called nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes could replace more commonly used materials for purposes that require electrical conductivity and good light transmission, said lead UofL researcher and physicist Gamini Sumanasekera. One possible use could be for more efficient solar cells for energy production.

Partnership to develop state stroke system

Kentucky sits atop the "stroke belt"--12 states in the Southeast that lead the nation in stroke deaths. A new UofL Health Care stroke partnership in western Kentucky will save lives, time and healthcare dollars. Recently, UofL President James Ramsey announced a $300,000 grant, in collaboration with Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah and the Purchase District Health Department, to pilot a stroke system for the state to standardize care and improve outcomes.
