Supporters give to Restore UofL after flash flood

2009 Flood

A flash flood inundated UofL's Belknap and Health Sciences Center campuses Aug. 4 when six inches of rain fell in 75 minutes. UofL suffered an estimated $15 million in damage from the flood. This is the worst natural disaster in the school's history and comes on the heels of the past year's wind and ice storms. Many supporters have made gifts to the Restore UofL Fund, a campaign to bring campus back to its original beauty.

 
 
 
 

Provost to give State of the University Address Sept. 16

Provost Shirley Willihnganz will give the annual State of the University Address on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 3:30 p.m., at Margaret Comstock Concert Hall in the School of Music Building. She will discuss UofL's 2008-09 achievements and challenges and its plans for the future. The public is invited to attend.

 
 
 
 

Homecoming 2009 set for Oct. 3-10

This year's events include Homecoming in the Highlands, a pep rally and block party at Baxter Avenue Oct. 5; the Alumnus of the Year and Alumni Fellows awards dinner and ceremony Oct. 8; Legacy Day for high school students who are children or grandchildren of UofL alumni Oct. 9; and the UofL vs. Southern Mississippi tailgate and game Oct. 10. Hank Conn named Alumnus of the Year

Hank Conn

J.B. Speed School of Engineering graduate Hank Conn will be honored Oct. 8 as the 2009 Alumnus of the Year. Also receiving honors at the Alumni Association's dinner and ceremony are the 10 Alumni Fellows. The Alumnus of the Year is the highest honor the association bestows. There will be a cocktail reception at 5 p.m., followed by the 6 p.m. dinner and ceremony. Tickets are $50 and may be purchased online.

 
 
 
 

UofL establishes endowed chair in oncology social work

Social work can play an important role in providing hope to those diagnosed with cancer. That's why the new Dr. Renato LaRocca Endowed Chair in Oncology Social Work has been established in the Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work at UofL. It is believed to be the first social work chair to focus on the myriad emotional and other needs of cancer patients and their families.

 
 
 
 

Law school students embrace community service

More than 100 students from the Brandeis School of Law volunteered their time Aug. 14 as part of Community Service Day, a new, optional program offered as part of the school's student orientation. Service activities included everything from trash pickup to working at Family Scholar House, a residence for single mothers who are working on college degrees.

 
 
 
 

UofL names its first Brown Fellows students

UofL this fall welcomes its first class of Brown Fellows, a premier scholarship and educational enrichment program for high-achieving students established this year by the James Graham Brown Foundation. Ten Kentucky and Indiana students will attend UofL on "full-ride-plus" scholarships that cover the cost of tuition, room and board and summer enrichment programs.

 
 
 
 

Road projects to affect Belknap Campus this fall

Heading to the Belknap Campus this fall? Detours and road closures will affect traffic from now through December. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet began work Aug. 17 on Warnock Avenue and the I-65 ramps to improve traffic flow. The KTC will also repair the Eastern Parkway bridge and make changes to the area of Eastern Parkway near Third Street that will improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow.

 
 
 
 

UofL beefs up emergency systems in classrooms

UofL has enhanced its emergency message system, UofL Alert, by installing 212 special, emergency-message-compatible phones in its largest classrooms. The phones are capable of transmitting written and audio messages. There already are 10,000 VoIP phones on UofL campuses in offices and residence halls. They are one of four primary modes of communication in an emergency.

 
 
 
 

Cardinal Singers win big at world championship

UofL's Cardinal Singers traveled to South Korea in July to compete in the World Choir Championship--and came back with first place in sacred music and mixed chorus. But after winning first place in all their competitions, the gala event and further competitions were canceled because some participants tested positive for the H1N1 flu. None of the UofL students became ill.

 
 
 
 

Librarian pens opera about boxing legend Joe Louis

Not everyone would see a connection between opera and boxing, but UofL librarian John Chenault does. The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the University of Maryland School of Music commissioned Chenault and collaborator Frank Proto to write an opera on the life of legendary boxer Joe Louis. It will premier April 17, 2010, at the Maryland Opera Studio.

Cardinal football plays first game of season Sept. 5

LaCrosse named UofL's Female Spring Sport Athlete of Year

UofL All-American golfer Cindy LaCrosse was named UofL's Female Spring Sport Athlete of the Year following her outstanding 2009 season for the Cardinals. She became the first All-American in school history after earning second team honors by Duramed/NGCA and Golf Week her senior year.
