Gov. Beshear and Cardinal Bird (right) enjoy smooth first ride.

Eastern Parkway has reopened to traffic following 10 months of work to repair the bridge and install traffic calming measures around the Speed School of Engineering. Repairing bridge substructure was a key aspect of the work.

Mayor Jerry Abramson, Rep. John Yarmuth, and Gov. Steve Beshear joined President James Ramsey (top photo, left to right) in cutting the ribbon together after a morning dedication June 21. Gov. Steve Beshear and the Cardinal Bird took a ceremonial first ride before it was officially opened to traffic.

"This project wasn't just about a bridge," Beshear said. "It was about improving and modernizing on a variety of levels this important corridor into the University of Louisville's Belknap Campus."

Dr. Ramsey thanked all the officials for their leadership and support in bringing the $7.9 million project to its completion. "This project turned out to be more complicated than expected, and it took a little longer than we had hoped," Ramsey said. "But we are happy to see the finished product and glad it enhances the experience of those of us who live, work and play at the University of Louisville." See full video here.

Masterson's Block Being Developed

Proposed IPA development

Long rumored, Masterson's Restaurant & Catering plans to move its businesses from its longtime home on South Third Street, near UofL. Their banquet facility there will close. Masterson's, in turn, plans to sell its Third Street property to an affiliate of Valparaiso, Ind.-based Investment Property Advisors LLC, which is proposing a $52 million investment to redevelop that site and surrounding properties into a mix of retail space and housing for UofL students. IPA CEO Larry Gough said his company also has contracts on four other residential buildings in the Masterson's block, which is bounded by Cardinal Boulevard and Third, Fourth and Bloom streets. Development plans call for the demolition of the Masterson's building to make way for two four-story buildings of luxury apartments. The first building planned, with 344 beds, is scheduled for completion by fall semester 2011, Gough said, and the second building would have 166 beds. No timeline for completion of the second building has been announced yet.

Sustainability Green Tip

There are simple, yet effective ways we can make our homes (or apartments) more efficient and affordable. Planting a tree, installing energy-efficient lightbulbs, and recycling all waste paper (home and work) can help preserve and rebuild locally the global tree base. Saving and increasing the overall plant cover helps drink up excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and ultimately leads to lower consumption of costly energy. At the same time, simply installing a quality low-flow showerhead can save thousands of gallons of fresh water per household quickly saving money.
