Scholarship Winners Recognized

Cardinal license plate scholarship winners

More than 60 UofL students received scholarships this year with funding from the Cardinal license plate program.

The UofL Alumni Association recognized and presented special Cardinal pins to more than 60 UofL students during the UofL Alumni Tailgate Central held prior to the recent Eastern Kentucky football game. This academic scholarship funding is made possible through the Kentucky Department of Transportation's College Affinity program and has totaled approximately $1.4 million to UofL students in the past decade. Within Kentucky universities, UofL leads in the number of license plates sold or renewed each year. Part of the funds are distributed under the Hallmark Scholars program while the Alumni Association awards several scholarships through its alumni club network and the Rodney Williams Memorial Scholarship. For more information on this winning program and how you can Drive With Pride! visit the Transportation Dept. website.

Education Building Named for Woodford, Harriett Porter

Woodford R. Porter

Woodford R. Porter

The University of Louisville will honor the late Woodford R. and Harriett B. Porter for their support of education, UofL and the community by naming a Belknap Campus building after them. The building that houses the College of Education and Human Development will be named for the couple at a Sept. 21 ceremony. Woodford Porter served on UofL boards from 1968 to 1991, and was the first African American trustee. He was a member of the UofL Board of Overseers, served on the UofL Foundation and the UofL Athletic Association Board of Directors, and was an adopted UofL alumnus. He was "a mentor to me in the early part of my presidency," said UofL President James Ramsey, "and became one of my close friends."

UofL Receives $3.15 Million Grant to Support Cancer Research

A $3.15 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to the University of Louisville will support the university's James Graham Brown Cancer Center and cancer research taking place in Owensboro, Ky. Researchers insert genes needed for drug development into the tobacco genome. With matching funds from Kentucky's "Bucks for Brains" program, more than $4.5 million will go to the Owensboro Cancer Research Program (OCRP). The funds will be used to create an endowed faculty post for a nationally recognized researcher in plant-based pharmaceuticals, as well as creating two new faculty posts to expand and enhance the research program. "When we established this program in partnership with Owensboro Medical Health System (OMHS) in 2006, we envisioned other significant organizations joining us in our effort to create and develop novel approaches to preventing and treating cancer," said UofL President James Ramsey. "This gift from the Helmsley Trust moves our vision forward and is recognition for the importance of the work taking place here."

UofL's Homecoming Includes Two Block Parties

Homecoming in the Highlands

Homecoming in the Highlands

Sometimes one block party just isn't enough. That's the thinking behind this year's Homecoming 2010 - Return to the Nest celebration which features a campus block party Sept. 25 and a second block party in the Highlands Oct. 3. Both events are free and open to the public.

"We tried something new with last year's Homecoming in the Highlands block party," said Jimmy Ford, executive director of the Alumni Association. "It was very well received by our alumni and fans, as well as the local restaurants and establishments along Baxter Avenue. The festival atmosphere makes it a great family event and we are looking forward to making this an annual event."

The Sept. 25 campus party kicks off Homecoming 2010 and will feature live music, food, carnival rides, games and appearances by UofL coaches and players. It will be at Third and Brandeis streets from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. Homecoming in the Highlands will be between Highland and Christy avenues on Oct. 3 from 4 p.m.to 8 p.m. The event includes a pep rally with the Cardinal Cheerleaders and sports figures, food and drink specials at participating businesses and a scavenger hunt. Full details may be found here.

"It has been my honor and privilege to serve as dean of Speed School," Wilhelm said. "I appreciate the strong support of the UofL administration, my faculty and staff colleagues, students, alumni, donors and advisers throughout my tenure. NIH Grant Benefits Oncology Care Program

Funding from the National Institutes of Health will help the University of Louisville develop, implement and evaluate an interdisciplinary oncology palliative care education program. "Palliative care is now viewed as much more than end-of-life care. It focuses on ongoing quality of life and well-being and is integral to the treatment of cancer patients from time of diagnosis throughout the trajectory of the illness," said Mark Pfeifer, MD, chief medical officer for UofL Health Care and principal investigator on this project.

Angel McCoughtry Leads Atlanta Dream to WNBA Finals With Record 42 Points

Angel McCoughtry

Former UofL athlete Angel McCoughtry

Former UofL powerhouse Angel McCoughtry needed a few minutes to let it all sink in. The second-year Dream star set a new league playoff scoring record and helped Atlanta make the WNBA finals for the first time. McCoughtry had 42 points to win a high-scoring duel with Cappie Pondexter as the Dream beat the New York Liberty 105-93 on Tuesday night to complete their unlikely march to the league finals.

Perhaps overwhelmed by it all, McCoughtry at first claimed the Eastern Conference finals clincher "was just another game." Just another game? McCoughtry couldn't leave that as her signoff on the biggest night of her two-year professional career. "I take it back," McCoughtry said when asked again. "This was different." McCoughtry, the 2009 WNBA rookie of the year, has scored more than 20 points in Atlanta's four straight playoff wins. "Angel McCoughtry just really showed how good she is going to be and what a bright star she is already," said New York coach Anne Donovan.

UofL honors 1970 team

UofL honored the 1970 Pasadena Bowl team at the Cardinals-Eastern Kentucky football game on Saturday, Sept. 11. About 30 former Card's players from UofL's 1970 team reunited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their Missouri Valley Conference title and Pasadena Bowl appearance. Under the direction of head coach Lee Corso, the Cardinals finished that year at 8-3-1 and tied Long Beach State 24-24 in Pasadena, Calif. The squad was the second team in school history to reach post-season play. The Cardinals were led that year by quarterback John Madeya, who threw for 1,750 yards and 11 touchdowns, along with Paul Mattingly, who was named the Most Valuable Player in the Pasadena Bowl. Among those attending were Horace Jones, who played five seasons with the Oakland Raiders at defensive end; linebacker Amos Martin, who played six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks; running back Bill Gatti, who led the team in rushing; and team captain Cookie Brinkman, who was the team's top receiver.

Holland, Wunderlich Named New York-Penn League All-Stars

Neil Holland

Former University of Louisville baseball All-Americans Neil Holland and Phil Wunderlich started their professional baseball careers in impressive fashion as both were selected for the 2010 New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

A right-handed pitcher from Owensboro, Ky., Holland represented the National League All-Stars in the game at Richmond County Ballpark in Staten Island, while Wunderlich, an infielder from Chicago, Ill., played for the American League All-Stars.

The All-Star recognition followed a strong summer for both players at the professional level. Both Holland and Wunderlich were key contributors to the 2010 Louisville baseball team, which set a new school record for wins with a 50-14 record overall. The Cardinals closed the season by advancing to a fourth straight NCAA Regional and winning a second straight BIG EAST Conference regular season championship.

Set computers to hibernate. Computers consume a large percentage of electricity, yet often they are left on while we’re away from our desks or homes. Help reduce this waste. Take a few seconds to set your computer to hibernate (or sleep for Macs) when idle. Under Control Panel, click Power Options, then under the Power Scheme tab, set System Hibernates to whatever time delay works for you. Your data will be saved and your windows will reopen when you return to your computer.
