President James Ramsey announces the CHAMPS program with Kent School dean Terry Singer
"This is a project that really will make a difference," President James Ramsey said at the announcement. "This is a big day for us, a big day for the community."
|
The Raymond Kent School of Social Work will work with several community youth-serving organizations to help teenagers avoid unhealthy relationships and risky behavior, thanks to a five-year, $4.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The federal grant from the department's Office of Adolescent Health will be used to test the impact of two teaching programs about teen risky sexual behavior, with the intent to reduce teen pregnancy, violence and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
Details of the program called CHAMPS, for Creating Healthy Adolescents through Meaningful Prevention Services, were announced Jan. 5 at a news conference at Americana Community Center, one of the partner organizations.
The grant will serve more than 1,260 young people aged 14-19 who are involved in community-based organizations participating with UofL in this effort. Ten partner groups will participate initially - six serving urban youth, three serving immigrant and refugee youth and one serving former foster children.
Anita Barbee, the social work professor leading the research team, called those teens among the most vulnerable to pregnancy, youth violence and disease.
The young people will sign up to be in a relationship communication course, and researchers will follow up with them for several years to see which of two courses works better to cut down on harmful behavior. The courses are designed to promote healthy relationships, self-confidence and positive communication skills. Course leaders will be trained this spring, and teenagers should begin participating this summer.

Robert Fox Jr.
"On each of my trips to Louisville considering this position, I have been impressed with the energy and activities of UofL, its libraries, and the city." Fox said.
|
When the search committee for the next University Libraries dean brought candidates to campus recently, one rose to the top of everyone's list: Robert Fox Jr. The UofL Board of Trustees has appointed Fox, associate dean of libraries at Georgia Institute of Technology, as professor and dean of University Libraries. He will assume his UofL responsibilities Feb. 14.
UofL's library system is a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries and is ranked among the top 100 libraries in North America. The library boasts more than 2.2 million volumes and 46,000 active serial subscriptions. The University Libraries include five libraries on the Belknap Campus and one on the Health Sciences Campus.
Fox has been associate dean of libraries at Georgia Tech since 2005. He has been credited with a number of innovations, such as numerous renovation and construction projects including two new commons spaces, a new library classroom and planning for a new desk that will combine several existing service points into one place. He also has improved user engagement through creation of a User Experience Department and separate student and faculty advisory boards.
"Bob Fox was the first choice of every committee and every individual he met when he visited campus," said UofL Provost Shirley Willihnganz. "He will bring energy, vision and expertise in areas that will be vital to the future of libraries, such as open access journals and improving the user experience. Under his leadership, we will continue to grow as one of the nation's top research libraries."

|
A familiar face is returning to Grawemeyer Hall.
Dana Mayton, who was the University of Louisville's chief lobbyist from 2004-07, has been hired as the senior associate vice president for government relations and special assistant to the president.

Carrol Blevins
Despite significant hearing loss in both ears and apparent dyslexia, Blevins will graduate magna cum laude with a grade point average of 3.8.
|
When Carrol Blevins steps onto the stage to receive her diploma at the University of Louisville's Dec. 16 commencement ceremony, it will mark the end of a long journey.
The 75-year-old psychology major never gave up hope that she would - someday - earn a college degree. Her journey wasn't easy. Along the way, she overcame learning disabilities and learned to ignore advice she was given five decades ago that suggested women should pursue marriage instead of college.
UofL psychology professor Edna Ross, who met Blevins several years ago, was struck by her fierce commitment to learn
"no matter what." Despite significant hearing loss in both ears and apparent dyslexia, Blevins will graduate magna cum laude with a grade point average of 3.8.
"She would sit through a lecture perhaps two or three times just to be sure she heard everything," said Ross. "She perseveres past adversity."
Blevins didn't begin her dream of a college education until the 1990s when she began taking classes through Kentucky Educational Television (KET). She soon become KET's poster child for lifelong learning and was featured on television commercials and other advertising.
In 2000 she started taking classes at UofL. Her humor, friendly demeanor and passion for learning soon caught the attention of classmates and faculty. Before long, Blevins became an icon of sorts for the College of Arts & Sciences.
